Philippine Embassy in The Hague Engages PHILSEA

Connecting Philippine Expertise with The Hague’s Legal Community

The Philippine Embassy in The Hague welcomed on 17 August a delegation from the Philippine International Law of the Sea Academy, Inc. (PHILSEA), headed by Executive Director Ervine Jules Beltran Sape, accompanied by co-officials Barachiel Concepcion and Nathalia Louisse Ablaza.

The meeting brought together Philippine diplomatic and legal professionals for an exchange on opportunities to deepen cooperation in international law, particularly in the field of the law of the sea.

Showcasing Philippine Legal Diplomacy

During the meeting, the Embassy provided an overview of its engagements with major international institutions in The Hague. Discussions covered the Embassy’s leadership and participation in relation to the Permanent Court of Arbitration, the Hague Conference on Private International Law, the Common Fund for Commodities, and the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons.

The Embassy also highlighted its legal diplomacy initiatives and cooperation with The Hague Academy of International Law and other institutions. These engagements demonstrate the Philippines’ active role in advancing international legal cooperation and maintaining a strong presence in The Hague’s multilateral community.

PHILSEA’s Mission to Build Filipino Legal Capacity

The PHILSEA delegation presented its programs aimed at strengthening Filipino knowledge and skills in the law of the sea. Its capacity-building efforts seek to equip Filipinos with both foundational legal knowledge and practical competencies relevant to maritime and international legal issues.

Such initiatives contribute to developing a new generation of Filipino professionals who can meaningfully participate in discussions and developments concerning the law of the sea.

Promoting Collaboration and Knowledge-Sharing

The exchange highlighted the complementary roles of Philippine diplomacy and legal education in strengthening the country’s capacity to engage with the international legal order.

Greater collaboration between institutions such as the Philippine Embassy and PHILSEA can open avenues for knowledge-sharing, professional development, and exposure to the international legal community in The Hague.

Investing in the Philippines’ Future Legal Expertise

The engagement reflects the shared importance of nurturing Filipino expertise in international law and the law of the sea. By connecting Philippine institutions with The Hague’s rich legal and diplomatic environment, such initiatives can help broaden opportunities for learning, collaboration, and professional growth.

The Philippine Embassy looks forward to further engagements with PHILSEA in support of legal education, capacity-building, and the advancement of Philippine expertise in international law and the law of the sea.
