Chile National Day
The Embassy of Chile in the Netherlands will mark Chile's National Day on 18 September 2026, celebrating the country's independence and the rich cultural traditions of its annual Fiestas Patrias.
The Chilean National Day is observed each year on 18 September and commemorates the establishment of Chile's First National Government Junta in 1810, a landmark in the country's independence process. The following day, 19 September, is traditionally observed as the Day of the Glories of the Army.
The Embassy of Chile in the Netherlands is located at Parkstraat 30 in The Hague, at the heart of the Netherlands' diplomatic community. The Netherlands' official government directory lists 18 September as Chile's National Day.
Celebrating Chilean heritage in the Netherlands
Fiestas Patrias is one of the most important celebrations in the Chilean calendar. Beyond its historical significance, the occasion provides an opportunity for Chileans living abroad, Dutch friends of Chile and members of the international diplomatic community to come together and celebrate Chilean culture.
Traditional celebrations are often associated with Chilean music and dance, cuisine, folklore and community gatherings. Previous National Day celebrations hosted by the Chilean Embassy in the Netherlands have brought together representatives of the Dutch government, international organisations and diplomatic missions in The Hague, alongside members of the Chilean community.
In 2025, the Embassy held a National Day reception at the official residence, attended by representatives of the Dutch government, international organisations and diplomatic missions. The programme also highlighted the longstanding relationship between Chile and the Netherlands.
Chile and the Netherlands
The National Day celebration also provides an opportunity to reflect on the close relationship between Chile and the Netherlands.
The two countries cooperate across areas including trade, sustainable development, energy, logistics and international affairs. Chile and the Netherlands have also worked together on clean-energy initiatives, including cooperation related to green hydrogen and sustainable port logistics.
Chile's diplomatic presence in The Hague is particularly significant because the city hosts numerous international organisations and courts. The Embassy has continued to engage with the Dutch government and international institutions on issues of shared interest.
A celebration for the Chilean community
For Chileans living in the Netherlands, 18 September is also an opportunity to maintain connections with their homeland and share Chilean traditions with the wider Dutch community.
Previous celebrations in the Netherlands have included folkloric performances, traditional Chilean food and cultural activities, bringing together Chilean residents and friends of Chile. The Embassy has also participated in The Hague's annual Embassy Festival, where Chilean culture, cuisine and products have been presented to an international audience.
18 September 2026
As Chile prepares to celebrate another National Day, the occasion in The Hague will offer an opportunity to celebrate Chile's history, culture and identity while highlighting the continuing friendship and cooperation between Chile and the Netherlands.
